The Solar System at human size

Sometimes you have to expect the unexpeted! During an evening walk I've found out a small scale planet under a picnic shelter in the bird national park of Laajalahti in Espoo. What was Uranus doing there? In 1992, the 1:1000 milion scale was created between Helsinki and Espoo by the Ursa Astrnomical Association. How about discovering the solar system at human size?

The sun is the starting point

The aim of this project was to provide an illustrative picture of the structure and dimension of our solar system. The sun is located at the top of Patterimäki in Pitäjänmäki (Helsinki) not far from the railway station. From there, you have a nice view and it's a good location for a picnic. When the model was created, the sun was visible from all planets. Unfortunately, the trees have grown much and it's now hidden.

On this map are pointed all 9 planets. As the planets are quite far from each other, the best way to find them is by bike. Spring and summer are the best moments as many birds are nesting in the bay.

Mercury is the closest planet from the sun
If you find Mercury, you can't miss Venus. They are just a few meters away from each others.

The Earth looks pretty weird. In fact it is represented with the Moon at the extremity of this metal blade. The planet is the little hole.

Uranus

As the display is old, only a few planets have a panel like this one with an explanation. Many have been removed or they are covered by paint.

Have a nice planet hunt!
